4. Campus Police Must Work Well with Children, Patients or Young Adults
Campus police need people skills and must be excellent communicators. “It’s about stopping problems, talking with these kids and parents. There are a lot of cops who just don’t have it in their nature to want to be in that environment,” says Officer Richard Goldstein of the Riverside College Police Department. Additionally, in hospitals, a degree of sensitivity and compassion is often required when dealing with patients or their families. “I believe nine times out of 10, if we give excellent customer service and talk to people in a respectful, polite manner and resolve their issues, we avoid conflict,” says Memorial Hermann Health System Security Executive Joe Bellino.
