Thefts Costs District $110,000, Upgrades Planned

TUCSON, Ariz.

As many as eight schools in the Sunnyside Unified School District will receive security upgrades.

Since August 2009, burglars have caused $110,000 in property loss to the schools. Items taken include laptop computers, projectors and parts from an air conditioner.

Central Alarm Inc. was awarded the $143,633 contract by the district’s governing board March 22. The company will install security and fire alarm systems in the eight schools.

This is the first of three phases to beef up security for the district. The first phase is expected to be completed by summer.

Additionally, in November 2009, the district contracted for an armed security officer to patrol the schools and property during nights, weekends and holidays.
