6 Surprisingly Common Crimes Committed in Hospitals

Employees Accessing Medical Records
Your hospital can have all the bases covered to protect patient information from getting into the wrong hands. All the encryptions and security protocols in the world, however, might not prevent a hospital employee from intentionally accessing medical records they have no business viewing. Campus Safety has reported on dozens of such cases. Employees have violated patient privacy for a number of reasons. Sometimes a well-known patient checks in and simple curiosity is enough to motivate an employee to access their medical files (this has happened to football players and celebrities). Disgruntled former employees have also been suspected of such crimes. One of the more bizarre cases CS reported on involved a hospital security guard allegedly using medical records to send a Facebook friend request to a girl who had been a patient at Mercy Saint Mary’s Hospital in Michigan. Hospitals know too well that such violations can lead to huge fines.
