“On March 12, 2024, at approximately 10:11 am, Lead Officer Francisco “Frank” Barrera was stationed at the ambulance bay, relieving another officer for lunch. A patient was brought in by wheelchair to the exterior ambulance bay from outpatient services. During a search of the patient for contraband and unauthorized weapons, a smell of marijuana was detected coming from the patient’s black backpack. Upon questioning, the patient admitted to having a gun in his backpack, stating in Spanish, “Pistola,” which means gun in Spanish. When asked if he had a license to carry, the patient responded that he used it for street protection.
At 11:03 a.m., LASD Century Station arrived to retrieve the weapon. Frank then put on gloves and efficiently removed the backpack, handing it over to Lead Officer Valencia. Valencia promptly took it to the Public Safety Office and secured it. Frank also promptly informed the command post to call LASD Century Station.
Shortly after, LASD deputies cited and released the patient with a misdemeanor, and the patient went back to receive treatment.”
