“On May 18, 2024, Armed Protection Officer Chris Counts exhibited extraordinary courage and leadership during a critical Code Silver incident at Kaiser West Los Angeles Hospital. At approximately 0008 hours, he received the urgent radio transmission about an armed suspect in the doctor’s parking lot. Without hesitation, Officer Counts ran approximately 75-100 yards to the scenę, prioritizing the safety of staff, patients, and visitors. Upon arrival, he assessed the situation, observing the suspect, Arcadio Laguna Jr., brandishing a loaded handgun. Demonstrating remarkable composure, Officer Counts drew his weapon and issued clear, authoritative commands for the suspect to drop the firearm. His ability to remain calm under pressure was crucial in maintaining control of the situation. Officer Counts’ persistence paid off when, after several commands, the suspect finally complied and disarmed himself. His quick thinking and decisive actions not only de-escalated a potentially tragic encounter but also ensured the safety of everyone involved, highlighting his unwavering dedication to his duties as a security professional.”
