NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The student convicted of using a webcam to spy on his roommate at Rutgers University was sentenced to 30 days in jail Monday.
Dharun Ravi’s roommate, Tyler Clementi, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge a few days after learning that Ravi had spied on him having sex with a man, The New York Times reports. Ravi faced up to 10 years in prison for the 15 counts against him, which included invasion of privacy and bias intimidation.
In addition to his prison sentence, Ravi was sentenced to three years’ probation, 300 hours of community service, counseling about cyberbullying and alternative lifestyles, and a $10,000 probation fee.
