Ambulance Theft
Hospitals have many reasons to leave ambulances unlocked with the keys inside. A lot of times when someone uses an ambulance they’re in a hurry, and aspiring thieves usually figure driving a stolen ambulance is a tough way to blend in. Still, ambulance thefts happen. Around midnight on June 15 this year, Christine Dejoie failed a sobriety test at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Pennsylvania and promptly fled the emergency room. Her getaway vehicle of choice? You guessed it. Dejoie was pulled over a few blocks from the hospital and charged with theft, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under the influence. In another instance a hospital was overcrowded and refused a patient service. Rather than finding a place in the waiting room, however, the patient went straight to an ambulance outside that may have already been running. It might be worth reviewing ambulance security procedures with your staff.
