NAPLES, Fla. — A woman who was visiting a patient at Physicians Regional-Pine Ridge was shot and killed the evening of July 5 by her estranged husband, who then attempted suicide. Hospital officials are reviewing their emergency protocols in the wake of the shooting.
Christine Moretz was shot by a short-barreled handgun, which her husband, Jeffrey Moretz, then used to shoot himself inside the hospital, the News-Press reports. The couple was separated and had filed for divorce.
Jeffrey survived his self-inflicted wound and was airlifted to another hospital, Marco News reports. Now, Physicians Regional-Pine Ridge is reviewing its emergency protocols, which include a “code silver” used to alert employees to someone displaying or using a weapon in the facility.

In 2009, Jeffrey had shot five rounds in the air, narrowly missing his daughter-in-law. Jeffrey’s son told officers his father was trying to kill him, NBC 2 reports. The charges were never pursued because Christine told the judge her husband was not a threat.
