Police have confirmed that the patient who died in a Bel Air hospital September 1 fatally shot himself in his room.
A hospital spokesman said the incident, which occurred at 6:15 a.m. at Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, did not require a review of hospital security procedures, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The 69-year-old patient’s name has not been released and the police report has also been withheld from the public as part of health confidentiality regulations.
After discovering the patient, hospital staff had initially called police to report a suspicious wound. But an investigation determined it was an isolated incident and no other patients were ever in danger.
The hospital said in a statement that it takes security very seriously and only searches patient bags when they’re suspicious.
