Individuals tasked with keeping U.S. hospitals safe and secure have a lot to consider. Healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than workers in all other industries, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor.
Not to mention in the last two-and-a-half years, hospitals have had to balance treating COVID patients and protecting employees to the best of their ability with continuing to provide care for non-COVID patients.
Furthermore, for the twelfth year in a row, healthcare saw the costliest breaches among all industries with the average cost reaching $10.1 million per breach — up nearly $1 million from 2021, according to IBM’s 2022 Cost of a Data Breach report.
All of these challenges mean healthcare experts and researchers are constantly releasing new data on hospital security statistics, leading practices and guidelines. For instance, on Jan. 1, 2022, the Joint Commission released updated workplace violence prevention standards which require hospitals to have a workplace violence prevention program led by a designated individual but developed by a multidisciplinary team. And while a necessity and essential to hospital staff safety and retention, it is another responsibility healthcare protection professionals must add to their growing to-do list.
We know it can be overwhelming and nearly impossible to keep up. That’s why we pulled together a quick, informative quiz using data from trusted healthcare security authorities, including the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS), The Joint Commission, Annals of Emergency Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).
