SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Two University of California, Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz) police officers received nominations for an American Red Cross Heroes award after they saved a man who was threatening to kill himself.
In August, Sgt. Mike Kimura and Crpl. Steve Garcia were able to talk a former student down from a wood-and-metal footbridge, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reports. The man had a rope around his neck that was tied to the bridge, and said he had taken Tylenol PM and alcohol.
Kimura and Garcia were nominated for the award by campus police. The award honors those in the county who have saved lives or performed extraordinary acts of compassion.
