SYDNEY, Australia — Police arrested a 42-year-old man at Sydney Airport for his alleged involvement in making two colossal bombs, which he planned to detonate at a Sydney hospital and the offices of a nearby eye surgeon.
Sydney officials discovered the full assembled bombs, said to be bigger than those used in the Boston Marathon bombings, with detonators in a duffel bag under a home in April. The suspect, whose name was not released, allegedly set the bombs to go off at 1:48 p.m. on a Saturday in April at the two locations, but the explosives had not been placed, The Australian reports.
Days before the bombs were to detonate, the suspect fled to Malta. Two days later, his ex-wife found the explosives and contacted authorities. Police had planned to extradite the accused; however they arrested him after he tried to re-enter the country.
The suspect was being treated for an eye condition by one of his would-be victims for a genetic condition. The man blamed the eye surgeon for causing the decline in his eyesight.
