ENID, Okla. — A tragic Oklahoma hospital shooting unfolded late Sunday night at Integris Health Enid Hospital, resulting in the deaths of a hospital public safety officer and the gunman.

Oklahoma Hospital Shooting Incident Overview

At approximately 11 p.m., Enid police officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence near 12th Street and Walnut Avenue, close to Integris Health Enid Hospital, reports The Oklahoman. The adult male suspect’s vehicle was then traced by police to the hospital, where the situation escalated.

As members of law enforcement approached the suspect near the hospital’s emergency room, the gunman — whose identity has not been released — opened fire, striking a police vehicle, reports KOCO.

The armed suspect then entered the hospital and fired more shots, tragically killing 72-year-old hospital public safety officer J.W. Bode.

The Enid law enforcement response was swift as police pursued the shooter inside Integris Health Enid Hospital, neutralizing the threat. The suspect died at the scene. No patients, visitors, or other hospital staff were injured during the shooting.

Law Enforcement Response and Official Statements

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) Public Information Officer Hunter McKee praised the prompt law enforcement response, stating the quick action taken by the Enid Police Department was critical in preventing further tragedy during the Oklahoma hospital shooting.

“This could have been a lot worse, but we’re fortunate that officers responded as quickly as they did and were able to get to the suspect when he made his way inside,” he said.

Integris Health Enid Hospital expressed deep sorrow at the loss of hospital security officer  Bode, calling him a devoted public safety professional who served the hospital for five years, reports The Enid News & Eagle.

In their social media tribute, the hospital highlighted his legacy as a father and grandfather and expressed gratitude for his selfless actions: “We are especially thankful for the quick and selfless actions of Officer J.W. Bode, who valiantly put himself in harm’s way to save others. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
