RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University (NCSU) is looking to improve its emergency communications after officials did not immediately issue notifications about a shooting off campus Monday.
Christopher John Bertrand, 42, shot and killed his ex-wife, Kathleen Ann Bertrand, in a shopping center parking lot before turning the gun on himself, Technician Online reports. NCSU did not issue alerts because the shooting was not considered an imminent threat; however, Brad Bohlander, chief communications officer, said that in the future, perceived dangers should be dealt with as immediately as imminent threats.
NCSU officials are now considering a system that would communicate all real or perceived threats so that the campus community will not rely on rumors and misinformation when deciding how to respond to an incident.
