The settlement was reached exactly two years after student Lauren McCluskey was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend on campus.
The officer was fired by Logan police two days after the Utah Department of Public Safety released its own findings following a monthslong investigation.
Former University of Utah Officer Miguel Deras is now the subject of an internal affairs investigation by the Logan Police Department for showing off explicit photos of Lauren McCluskey.
According to an investigation by The Washington Post, three of the deaths have been ruled homicides and a nursing assistant is the person of interest.
The security officer died a month after collapsing during an altercation with a psychiatric patient at Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital.
The patients died from environmental heat exposure after Hurricane Irma knocked out the power to its central air conditioning.
The security guard and an ex-cop allegedly committed the murders in April 2016 while selling cocaine.
The allegations come as prosecutors examine the unexplained deaths of infants during the suspect’s time as a nurse in the area.
The jury was reportedly deadlocked at 8-4 in favor of lesser charges.
