Illinois School Safety Conference Announces Speaker Line-up

The event, which will take place April 20 at Bristol Palace, will cover digital technology, information sharing, school shootings, transgender student safety and more.

The Illinois State Board of Education, RETA Security, Oak Park and River Forest High School, Oak Park Police and Fire Departments, and the Proviso Area for Exceptional Children will host the Illinois School Safety Conference on April 20. The event is free and will take place at Bristol Palace, 828 E. Rand Rd., Mount Prospect, Ill., 60056.

Attendees will learn how to enhance the safety and security of their K-12 campuses on a day-to-day and long-term basis. The information and tips will be practical and easy to apply, and there will be ample time for attendees to ask specific questions.

K-12 district administrators, school administrators, police and fire officials, transportation directors and other officials responsible for school safety are encouraged to participate. Topics covered will include:

  • “While Technology Continues to Evolve, the Need to Instill and Reinforce Concepts of Digital Citizenship Remain Constant.” This session will highlight current trends, review the various digital platforms, and illustrate county-specific case examples. Brittney Burns, Assistant State’s Attorney, Community Justice Center, Cook County
  • “School Safety Information Sharing Program and Suspicious Activity in Schools.” Mia Ray Langheim, School Intelligence Officer, Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center Illinois State Police
  • “Effective Security Before and After School Hours” Paul Timm, PSP, president of RETA Security Inc.
  • “A Decision Making Matrix: Learned from Columbine H.S. , Platte Canyon H.S. and Youth with a Mission School Shootings.”  A. J. DeAndera, Sergeant, 23 year veteran of the Arvada, Colo., Police Department. Currently assigned to the Community Response Impact Team (CRIT). Served as a member and Team Leader of the Jefferson County Regional SWAT Team for 16 years.
  • “Seconds Matter.” This program encompasses the full Life Cycle of Active Threat Preparedness across all Mission areas including Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Ernest Brown, Executive Director; Marcos Estrada, Deputy Director of Training and Special Projects; Robert Dunne, Training & Exercise Coordinator,  Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management
  • “A Legal Guide to Serving Transgender Students.” Transgender students may have needs that arise at school that relate in important ways to their gender identity. This session will explore areas in which schools have legal obligations to support their transgender students – including student records, safety, activities, facility access, and health services – and some of the state and federal laws applicable to each area. A free continental breakfast will be provided, and vendors will also be exhibiting. Additionally, CPDU/CEU paperwork will be provided on site.
