Gunman Opens Fire During School Board Meeting

Published: December 13, 2010

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — A gunman who opened fire on a Florida Panhandle school board meeting on Dec. 14 was shot four times by District Security Director Mike Jones. The shooter then took his own life, but no board members were injured during the incident.

Clay Duke, a 56-year-old ex-convict, approached the podium during the meeting and used a can of red spray paint to draw a V with a circle around it on a wall. He then brandished his gun and began to address the board members, ABC News reports.

Duke’s wife had been fired from the school district, according to the News Herald. Police say he had planned the shooting, having circled the day of Tuesday, Dec. 14 on his calendar, the North County Times reports. The calendar was discovered after police searched Duke’s mobile home.

Duke allowed women and children to leave the room before he opened fire on the remaining board members, missing all of them. Mike Jones, the district security chief, returned fire.
