NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A former student from Rutgers University could face up to 10 years in jail and deportation to his native India. Dharun Ravi was found guilty today of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation for spying on his gay roommate using a webcam.
Ravi was also found guilty of witness tampering, hindering apprehension and tampering of physical evidence, CNN reports. His roommate, Tyler Clementi, killed himself in September 2010 by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after discovering that Ravi had spied on his sexual encounter with another man.
Ravi had turned down a plea deal that would have allowed him to avoid jail time by undergoing counseling, completing 600 hours of community service and disposing of any information that could identify the man who had the encounter with Clementi.
Molly Wei, another student who watched the encounter with Ravi, reached a plea deal in May in which she agreed to testify against Ravi, complete a three-year program on cyberbullying and do 300 hours of community service.
