CLEVELAND—As a result of the merger of some schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, rival gangs will now be placed under one roof, prompting the district to implement security upgrades.
As many as 16 schools have been closed or combined in the district because of declining enrollment, according to WKYC.com. Now, as many as 400 additional students, including some from rival gangs, will be added to the student body at East Tech, a school that has a tough reputation.
Students will now be required to scan their ID cards when they enter buildings. Additionally, metal detectors and x-ray machines have been put in place, according to fox8.com. Officers from the district, the Cleveland Police Department and the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority will monitor the schools daily. Moreover, school officials have implemented a zero tolerance policy to guarantee that the schools have a positive learning environment.
