LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A student from Coast Career Institute shot and killed a teacher at the school on Feb. 23. There were 13 other students in the classroom during the shooting; one was slightly injured.

Law Thien Huynh, 22, drew a semiautomatic weapon and shot Roberto Herrera, 44, at point-blank range during a security guard class, the Los Angeles Times reports. Herrera, a former security guard, had been teaching a class based on his former profession for three years at the college.

After the shooting, Huynh told the other students in the class to call 911, dropped his weapon and left the building to smoke a cigarette, Mail Online reports. The gunman refused to be taken into custody until after he had finished smoking the cigarette.

Police initially reported that Herrera and Huynh had an argument before the incident. The motive is still unclear, but police believe Herrera was the intended target.
