Moscow, Russia – At least six people were killed and 28 were injured Monday in a school shooting at a university in Russia.
The mass campus shooting happened at Perm State University in Perm, which is about 800 miles east of Moscow in the Ural mountains. The suspected shooter has been identified as a student at the school, reports NPR. Russian officials say the student was injured while being apprehended and is being treated at a local hospital for their injuries.
The mass shooting happened when the attacker walked onto campus and opened fire, reports the BBC. Students and faculty members responded by barricading themselves inside the building or evacuating by jumping out of windows. Video taken by a local news station shows students jumping out of second story windows of a building on campus.
Authorities believe the suspected gunman acted alone and did not have any political or religious motives for the shooting.
Initially, it was reported that eight people had been killed, however, that number was revised to six shortly thereafter, reports the Associated Press.
Video taken during the attack shows a person wearing black and a helmet walking onto campus and carrying a long-barreled weapon. Guns are restricted in Russia, but many people obtain gun permits for hunting, reports AP.
Despite the country’s strict gun laws, mass shootings do happen there. In May, a gunman opened fire at a school in Kazan, Tatarstan Republic, Russia. Nine people – seven students and two teachers – died during the attack.
In 2018, a college in Kerch experienced a mass shooting where 21 people were killed and 50 were wounded.
In response to the active shooter attack in May this year, authorities called for all schools in the area to be inspected and security improved. Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the head of the National Guard of Russia to “urgently” come up with new gun control measures.
