4. BE AWARE OF PATIENT BEHAVIORS

Since an estimated 80% of violence against nurses is committed by patients, being attuned to patient behavior that could be a precursor to violence is critical.

Some possible indicators of violence include:

Verbal cues

  • Speaking loudly or yelling
  • Swearing
  • Threatening tone of voice

Non-verbal or behavioral cues

  • Physical appearance (neglected clothing, hygiene)
  • Arms held tight across the chest
  • Clenched fists
  • Heavy breathing
  • Pacing, agitation
  • A scared look signifying fear or high anxiety
  • A fixed stare
  • Aggressive or threatening posture
  • Throwing objects
  • Quick changes in behavior
  • Indications of intoxication (alcohol or drugs)
