Here’s How 7 Institutions Dealt with Recent Ransomware Attacks

Lukas Hospital (Germany)

The IT department at Lukas Hospital realized its computer system was infected with something on Feb. 10 (the same week as the previous two attacks) and immediately “pulled the plug on everything,” according to a hospital spokesman.

Due to the quick actions of IT officials and the presence of previously backed up data, approximately 85 percent of the hospital’s operations were able to continue as normal after the attack, although the email system was compromised and some high risk surgeries were postponed.

In contrast to their Hollywood counterpart, Lukas Hospital officials refused to engage in talks with the hacker and are instead using software developed to cleanse the infected network and scan all servers and devices for additional viruses.

Computer experts continue working to fully restore the network and Germany’s State Criminal Investigation Office is investigating the attack.
