Here’s How 7 Institutions Dealt with Recent Ransomware Attacks

Horry County School District (S.C.)

On Feb. 8, employees of the Horry County School District discovered that 25 of their information servers had been infected with a virus. IT personnel immediately took down all servers to prevent the spread of the ransomware. The ransomware is believed to have penetrated the network from an older server running outdated equipment.

The hackers demanded .8 bitcoins to restore access to each computer, for a total ransom of 20 bitcoins.

After consulting with the FBI, the district agreed to pay the ransom, which converted to approximately $8,500, to get rid of the virus. The district’s network has been back up and running since administrators received the decryption key.
