Congratulations to Western Carolina University Chief of Police Steve Lillard for being named one of this year’s Campus Safety Director of the Year finalists.
Here are some of his notable achievements:
- Provided the following programming for students: Rape Aggression Defense (RAD), Run‐Hide‐Fight Active Shooter Awareness, Sexual Assault Risk Awareness, Alcohol Risk Awareness, and Study Abroad Safety.
- In 2019, the department had more than 26,000 interactions with individuals, a record number for its community programs.
- Despite an enrollment increase of more than 5% in 2018, community-oriented policing efforts led to a decrease or at least a plateau of all non‐sexual Clery reportable crimes (33% fewer burglaries, 100% fewer arsons and 83% fewer aggravated assaults).
The Director of the Year winners and runners-up will be announced this summer at Campus Safety Conference East, being held in Bethesda, Maryland, July 12-14. For more information, visit CampusSafetyConference.com, email [email protected] or call (855) 351-0927.
