Campus Safety 2012 Director of the Year Finalists Announced

Larry Ellerman, Chief of Police, University of Louisiana at Monroe

  • Moved his department to a 14,000 square foot facility, achieving savings by partnering with local law enforcement and utilizing prisoner labor
  • Dispatch center now monitors more than 850 security cameras and 15 call box stations
  • Instrumental in the school receiving a $3.4 million Doppler radar grant from FEMA so all of Northeast Louisiana can receive enhanced severe weather warnings

Kevin Graham, Director of Campus Security, Florida Institute of Technology

  • Worked with the Secret Service and other local authorities to ensure the security of President Barack Obama, Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan and many other political figures
  • Implemented a blue light emergency phone system on campus, coordinating the installation of 80 units across campus
  • Performed a “budget scrub” that identified vendor overcharges, which helped to pay for six new security golf carts

Michael Heidingsfield, Director of Police, University of Texas System Police

  • In a little over a year, revised 35 critical policies, including those related to pursuits, weapons, authority and jurisdiction, use of force, code of conduct, racial profiling, training and promotions
  • Worked so now an inspector is a regular participant in the Texas Fusion Center and another being assigned general intelligence duties
  • Redesigned officers’ uniforms and patches so they wouldn’t be confused with private security personnel

Regina Lawson, Chief of Police, Wake Forest University

  • Helped to substantially improve relations between the university and surrounding neighborhoods
  • Created or expanded the school’s community policing initiative, crisis management team, campus assessment response and evaluation team, victim assistance program and more
  • Department was one of the first to complete the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators accreditation program

Patrick Linfante, Director of Public Safety, Seton Hall University

  • Seton Hall University was one of the first schools to install sprinklers in all residence halls; university also upgraded its fire alarm system
  • Instituted bicycle patrols and implemented the community policing models, resulting in decreased response times and increased respect by campus community
  • Implemented crime prevention programs, which led to the reduction of burglaries from 89 in 2001 to five in 2011
