Ind. School Principal Killed in Bus Crash While Saving Lives

Police are still investigating what caused the tragic accident.

An Indianapolis elementary school principal was fatally struck by a bus while she pushed several students out of harm’s way Jan. 26.

Susan Jordan, the Principal of Amy Beverland Elementary School, was killed when a school bus unexpectedly jumped forward just after school let out, according to the Huffington Post.

Busses were in a row outside of the school around 2:45 p.m. when the bus moved. The driver of the bus told police she was unsure what caused the bus to lurch forward, but she said she saw Jordan pushing children out of the way in the moments before Jordan was hit.

“At some point, the stationary bus lurched forward and jumped the curb. The bus was not moving at the time directly before it jumped the curb,” Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith said.

Two ten year olds were also taken to the hospital with injuries, although they are not life-threatening. The bus was also full of students but none of them were injured.

Jordan, 69, had been the principal at the school for 22 years and was described as a legend by the superintendent of the district.

Schools were not in session Jan. 27 and counseling services will be provided for those who need it. Below is a video students and faculty made for Jordan in May of last year.
