LA/OC IAHSS Recognizes Hospital Security Officers for Saving Lives, Outstanding Performances

Award recipient Flavio Ramos of UCI Health.

Public Safety Officer Flavio Ramos exemplifies guardianship and the service-oriented mission of our department. This past year, Flavio was the primary responder to over 782 incidents, including 42 involving physically aggressive and combative subjects. The vast majority of those situations were peacefully resolved without incident.

I have personally witnessed and been impressed with Flavio’s ability to verbally de-escalate extremely volatile situations. Flavio has also accepted leadership of his public safety team during times his supervisor was away. I greatly appreciate Flavio’s expertise and dedication to his team and the organization.

Flavio is actively engaged with our community. He strives to provide service with compassion and excellence to support the safety of those receiving care, visiting, or working at UCI Health.

In May 2019, our emergency dispatch center broadcasted a subject was going to the top of our parking structure to commit suicide. The UCI police and public safety team immediately responded to the area. Officer Ramos arrived at the parking structure within one minute and was the first to reach the top. He immediately ran to assist another subject who was trying to hold the suicidal subject that was partially hanging over the edge of the structure.

Flavio was able to safely grab onto the subject and pull him off of the ledge and back onto the parking structure where other team members arrived to help detain the subject. Flavio’s prompt response and courageous actions helped save the life of this young man.
