Yale Bans Fraternity From Campus for Slurs Against Women

Published: May 17, 2011

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Yale University has banned Delta Kappa Epsilon from conducting activities on campus for five years in response to an incident last October where members chanted offensive slurs about women.

After the incident, 16 students and alumnae filed a complaint with the federal Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights about the university’s hostile sexual environment, The New York Times reports. An investigation is currently underway.

Mary Miller, dean of Yale College, sent a letter to the fraternity’s national organization asking that the chapter be suspended for five years. Doug Lanpher, executive director of Delta Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity, called the restrictions excessive and said the chapter had already been put on probation.

Some students who participated in the chanting were penalized for violating undergraduate regulations.
