LOS ANGELES — The University of Southern California (USC) has increased car and Segway patrols and assigned additional officers to escort students from campus during late hours following the shooting deaths of two students near campus.
In a letter to the campus community, President C. L. Max Nikias said that the Los Angeles Police Department will increase the use of cutting-edge technology to combat crime around USC and will increase data sharing with the USC Department of Public Safety.
USC is also working to create Web sites and orientation sessions to educate students about campus safety, according to the letter.
Some of the specific improvements include:

- Stepped-up patrols of Jefferson, Figueroa, Vermont, and Exposition
- A security ambassador will be redeployed to 28th Street (the Row) to perform a walking patrol from University Avenue to Figueroa Street
- High-capacity computing and sophisticated algorithms used for predictive policing
- Trim trees to reduce the blockage of existing street lighting,
- Significantly improved street lighting in key areas
- 30 more LAPD officers to patrol the area (mostly paid for by the school)
- Installation of more video surveillance cameras on city light posts
- Install brighter, more efficient light bulbs
