Univ. of Cincinnati Adding 700 LED Lights to Campus

School officials hope to create a safer perimeter around the school's campus.

The University of Cincinnati is beginning phase two of a lighting upgrade on campus to improve security.

Phase one of the upgrade involved the installation of 400 LED lights, which replaced old yellow lights, around the campus on 33 streets, according to wcpo.com.

Now school officials say they’ll begin installing an additional 400 LED lights on 30 streets around campus.

Violent crime is down more than 50 percent since the first 300 lights were installed, which coincided with increased walking beats for UC safety ambassadors.

The improved LED lights give off double the light as the old lights. Research shows that crime rates go down when streetlights are enhanced.
