GROTON, Conn. — A gunman who caused the lockdown of the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus committed suicide Tuesday morning.
The incident began at 5 p.m. Monday when police began searching for Timothy Devine, 30, who was armed. His car was located at Avery Point at 10 p.m., prompting a lockdown of the campus.
The man had crawled beneath a dock, and pointed his weapon at police. Police unsuccessfully attempted to distract Devine with bean bags, flash grenades and a tactical vehicle; they also negotiated with him on his cell phone for several hours to no avail.
Eventually, he threw his cell phone away and refused to negotiate further. Before dawn, he turned the gun on himself.
The UConn community received ongoing text message and E-mail alerts about the situation via the University Alert Notification System, UConn Today reports. The campus reopened Tuesday morning.
Devine was a firefighter with the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District, a fitness trainer and a UConn graduate, reports the Hartford Courant.
