The University of Cincinnati has reached a $5.3 million settlement with the family of a man who was fatally shot by a university police officer during a traffic stop July 19.
Under the settlement conditions, the university will also provide free tuition to each of the victim’s 12 children and create a memorial on campus commemorating the victim, according to ABC News.
Samuel DuBose was fatally shot by university police officer Ray Tensing after the officer pulled DuBose over for not having a front license plate. Officer Tensing has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder.
Campus Safety had previously reported that initially after the incident, Tensing claimed he was dragged by DuBose’s car when DuBose abruptly began to drive away during the traffic stop. Body camera footage of the incident was used to disprove that statement.

The university issued a statement apologizing for the incident and expressing condolences to DuBose’s family.
Terina Allen, Dubose’s sister, said she hopes people will obey police orders, “but in the end [police] can’t be judge, jury and executioner.”
A hearing has been set for Tensing on Dec. 11.
