U. of Oregon Students Could Face Charges for Out of Control Snowball Fight
EUGENE, Ore. — University of Oregon officials have suspended one of its starting football players from playing in the upcoming Alamo Bowl game, as well as taken disciplinary action against other team players for their role in a snowball fight that spun out of control on Friday.
Initially, UO football players challenged fans to a playful snowball fight, which later escalated into a brawl where students blocked traffic and attacked innocent bystanders, ABC News reports.
UO professor Sherwin Simmons was one of the alleged victims. Video posted on YouTube shows Simmons emerging out of his vehicle after being pelted with snowballs and a bucket of snow. When the professor calmly approached the students, they started shouting at him and hurling more snowballs. The video has received more than 2 million views.
UO football player Pharaoh Brown has been suspended from playing in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Antonio, and other Ducks players also received discipline. Currently, campus police are trying to identify how many students were involved in the incident. Although no one has pressed charges yet, a spokesperson for the campus police department noted criminal charges could be filed in the future.
