Police shot a man outside of an Austin, Texas elementary school who they say was upset about a break up and possibly suicidal.

The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. on June 14 before any students arrived on campus, reports kvue.com.

Ray Barbosa Ojeda, 19, reportedly called Austin police at 4:05 a.m. and said he was outside Odom Elementary School with a machete and gun.

Police arrived to find Ojeda pointing a machete toward himself and a negotiator was brought in to speak with him. A SWAT team also set up a perimeter around the school to ensure no students or staff members tried to enter the campus.

When Ojeda began raising his machete as if he was going to cut himself, an officer shot him once in the abdomen, according to police.

Ojeda was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. No guns were found at the scene.

After speaking with his family members, police say Ojeda was upset about a recent break up.

The officer who shot Ojeda was placed on administrative leave as police investigate the incident.
