NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Legislature approved a proposal that would allow school districts to hire retired law enforcement officers to patrol campuses on Wednesday after it received approval from Gov. Bill Haslam.
If approved, retired officers would have to complete a school policing course, as well as more than 400 hours of training, the Associated Press reports.
Sponsored by Rep. Eric Watson, the original proposal would have allowed teachers and faculty with handguns to be armed on campus.
