CINCINNATI, Ohio – A 60-year-old teacher at Colerain High School had to undergo brain surgery after being assaulted by a 15-year-old student on Thursday.

Her brain injury was so severe that doctors had to remove her skull cap in order to prevent brain damage from the swelling, reports the Kansas City Star.

The alleged beating happened at about 2:15 when school resource officers (SROs) received reports that a teacher was being assaulted, reports KWTX. The student had taken an unknown drug and became distraught, according to local police.

The unidentified student then punched the teacher several times in the head. The student also assaulted a 15-year-old classmate before running out of the classroom.

The suspect was apprehended by authorities at a nearby career center. He appeared to be hallucinating and had a self-inflicted head injury.

The teacher was transported from Colerain High School to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to a statement by the Colerain Police Department. She is now awake and recovering from the attack, reports Fox19. She is being fed through a feeding tube.

The student was charged with felonious assault and, after being treated at the hospital for his injuries, was transported to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. The suspect does not have a previous juvenile record in Hamilton County, reports WLWT.

In Monday’s first board meeting of the Northwest Local School District since the attack, one former teacher in the district said she retired from teaching for her own safety because of incidents like the one that happened on Thursday at Colerain High School. Another educator became emotional during the meeting.
