Students Fail to Report Classmate With Gun

Published: February 28, 2011

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — A student from Millennium High School was arrested after bringing a gun to campus on Feb. 14 with the intention of shooting a teacher. The student also brought a gun to school on Feb. 11, but other students who saw the weapon failed to report the incident because the gun wasn’t loaded.

A student at the school reported seeing the weapon around noon on Feb. 14, AZCentral.com reports. Shortly after, the student was taken into custody and the weapon was confiscated. Since the incident, school staff has spoken with students in small groups about the importance of notifying school officials about illegal activities on campus.

The school also held a community forum on Feb. 24 to address parents’ concerns and take suggestions on how to improve security on campus.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has charged the 15-year-old student who brought the gun to school with one count of attempted murder and one count of a minor in possession of a weapon.
