A 15-year-old private school student in Monterrey, Mexico opened fire on his fellow students and a teacher before turning the gun on himself. Three classmates and a teacher were wounded, while the suspect died.
The attack happened Wednesday at the Colegio Americano del Noreste, and the gunman has been identified as Federico Guevara Elizondo.
Graphic video from a school security camera of the shooting was leaked on social media and showed the suspect using a handgun to shoot at seated classmates as well as at a faculty member. His first attempt at suicide failed because he missed his head, reports WKBN. The gunman then ran to his backpack to reload his firearm. The video shows the suspect saying something to the other students who then fled the classroom. Guevara then shot himself in the head.
The governor of the State of Nuevo León, Jaime Rodríguez, instructed the state attorney to investigate who leaked the video.
Officials are trying to determine Guevara’s motives, but a state spokesman suggested he had mental health issues and was in therapy, reports the New York Times. Authorities are also investigating where Guevara obtained the firearm that was used in the attack.
Three of the wounded victims are in critical condition.
Although school shootings in Mexico are rare, seven years ago, Nuevo León launched a public school security program that included random checks of student backpacks. The program was discontinued in response to parent complaints, reports the BBC.
