A shooting that took place after a fire alarm was pulled outside of a Boston high school left one student dead June 8.
Students reported hearing five to seven shots as people were filing back into Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester, and investigators are exploring the possibility that the shooting was gang related, according to the Boston Globe.
The 17-year-old victim has not been identified and no arrests have been made yet by Boston police.
“This is a sad day when a 17-year-old life is lost,” Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans says. “We should be outraged, and the public should be stepping up.”

In addition to the student who died, a teacher and a student were grazed by bullets, and another student was shot in the buttocks.
Students initially speculated that the fire alarm was pulled intentionally, but police say the alarm appears to have been accidental, and it is unknown if the person killed was the intended target in the shooting.
The high school and three other schools in the area (Dearborn STEM Academy, the Martin Luther King Jr. K-8 School and the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School) were placed in “safe mode” after the shooting, meaning students were not allowed to leave. Trauma counselors will be available at the high school June 9.
“I think the community is getting sick and tired of what’s happening in the city, in terms of shootings,” Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said.
