AUSTIN, Texas — As a result of two Texas laws, the Austin Independent School District (AISD) Police Department will no longer issue citations to students under the age of 17. However, campus police can still issue tickets to 17- and 18-year-olds.
The goal of the laws is to allow school officials to discipline students using their own code of conduct rather than immediately alerting law enforcement, according to KXAN.com. In the past, students have been ticketed for putting on perfume in class to throwing a paper airplane.
Prior to the laws passing, AISD has made an effort to write fewer tickets. During the 2012-2013 school year, officers wrote roughly 740 tickets to students, a 29% drop compared to the prior year.
