ROSWELL, N.M. — A 12-year-old Berrendo Middle School student shot two of his classmates on Tuesday. An 11-year-old boy was shot in the face and neck and is in critical condition, while the other victim, Kendal Sanders, 13, had surgery that same day. Her condition has been upgraded to stable.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez hailed John Masterson, an 8th grade social studies teacher at the school, for persuading the suspect to put down his weapon, reports Good Morning America.
The incident happened at 8 a.m. in the gym. The suspect is believed to have been carrying a . 20-gauge shotgun in his band case. The attack lasted for about 10 seconds until Masterson persuaded the alleged gunman to surrender.
Police say the boy may have warned some of his classmates not to come to school that day, reports CNN. The suspect took the firearm from his home, modified it and planned the attack, reports Reuters.
Authorities have not determined a motive for the attack.
