ARLINGTON, Texas — A student who fatally shot his psychologist’s husband and then committed suicide on April 22 had indicated to his friends that he might be suicidal. On the day of the shooting, Antonio Garcia had learned he was being referred to the University of Texas at Arlington’s mental health services for behaving inappropriately toward the psychologist.
In a counseling session that took place the day before the shooting, UTA psychologist Adria Villarreal decided to refer Garcia to mental-health services, the Star-Telegram reports. Later that day, she believed Garcia was following her and stopped her car to call 911.
Police believe that Villarreal was the intended target of the shooting because her husband, Steven McIntosh, was driving her car on the day of the incident. Garcia shot McIntosh in front of a school and then took his own life. The couple’s three-year-old daughter was uninjured.
Garcia had purchased the gun at a pawnshop more than a week before the shooting.
