Student Allowed Back On Campus Prior to Murder, Suicide

ARLINGTON, Texas — A student at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) who shot and killed his psychologist’s husband was allowed back onto campus after he was involuntarily committed two months prior to the murder.

The case raises the question as to whether Antonio Garcia should have been admitted back onto the campus so soon after being committed, the Star-Telegram reports. Garcia, who committed suicide after the shooting, had not completed a four-part mental health assessment given to him by the university.

A UTA spokeswoman said that Garcia was allowed back onto the campus because he cooperated with a counseling assessment and was continuing to seek care from the campus counseling staff.
