CLEVELAND, Ohio — Despite lacking jurisdiction, security force members of MetroHealth System wrote more than 2,000 parking tickets over the past two years.
The four-year agreement between MetroHealth and Cleveland that gave the security force authority to write tickets expired in 2009, Cleveland.com reports. Hospital and city officials didn’t notice, and hospital security continued to write citations that represent close to $74,000 in fines.
Cleveland’s Interim Law Director Barbara Langhenry said the city considers the tickets valid, and that extension was agreed to verbally. The agreement, however, said it must be extended in writing.
MetroHealth stopped writing tickets after being notified of the expiration last month.
