Rutgers University Starts Dispatching Partnership with Local Borough
DUNELLEN, N.J.
Rutgers University is taking on the task of dispatching all police, fire and rescue squads for Dunellen, N.J., as part of a cost-savings arrangement. The deal is expected to save the borough $100,000 a year.
According to University Police Chief Rhonda Harris, Rutgers is the only school to her knowledge that is providing this type of dispatching service for municipal departments. Harris is expecting a seamless transition that will not be noticed by the community and will not affect the service.
The university will be paid $80,000 annually for its dispatching services, which will begin at the start of 2010.
The move could attract more towns looking to trim costs, nj.com reports Middlesex County Freeholder H. James Polos saying.
