Prosecutors Seek Holmes’ Motive for Theater Shooting
DENVER — Prosecutors went before a judge Thursday for access to theater shooting suspect James Holmes’ school records, as his anger at failing his oral exam at the University of Colorado (CU) could be a possible motive for the massacre, according to arguments by Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson.
Holmes, a former CU neuroscience doctoral candidate, failed his oral board exam on June 7 and withdrew from the college three days later, the Associated Press reports. Prosecutors argued that the school records would establish a motive by showing what Holmes hoped to accomplish at CU and the “dissatisfaction with what occurred in his life that led to this.”
Campus police ran a background check on Holmes before the theater shooting. Officials have declined to comment on the reason for the check.
