Private School Questions Obligation to Report Sexual Assault
HONOLULU, Hawaii
Kamehameha school officials have received criticism for not reporting a sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl that occurred in campus dorms.
According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin, the school’s spokeswoman says campus officials would have reported the incident if there were a mandatory policy requiring them to do so. Instead, the school informed the girl’s parents and left it to them to report the crime. The spokeswoman also says the alleged rape was not reported to protect the victim’s emotional stability.
Two 13-year-old male students are being charged with six counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of third-degree sexual assault, three counts of kidnapping and burglary., according to the Honolulu Star Bulliten.
State law requires public schools to report criminal acts to police; however, Kamehameha Schools is a private institution.
