OAKLAND, Calif. — Parents and advocates are working to increase safety in the San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland where pimps are targeting female middle school students.
The neighborhood became a center of sex trafficking after motels moved into the community several decades ago, NPR reports. School district officials said it is hard to prevent pimps from speaking with students because they look like regular men.
While people often think young girls are kidnapped and trafficked, girls have actually been seduced or entered into relationships with pimps prior to be trafficked, according to Nhuanh Ly, program coordinator for Banteay Srei, a group that works with neighborhood girls to build self-esteem.
