Parolee Escapes from Hospital, Kills Girlfriend

BERGEN COUNTY, N.J.—The New Jersey Parole Board is debating whether to change security procedures for recently released prisoners after a man escaped from a Newark University Hospital while under the agency’s custody and allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend.

David Goodell was staying a Logan Hall, a privately run halfway house, as a condition of his parole when he allegedly had a seizure. An unarmed civilian employee accompanied Goodell to the hospital around 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 31, but the suspect ran as soon as they arrived.

The suspect made arrangements to meet with his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend Viviana Tulli in the early morning hours on Sept. 1. When Tulli told Goodell that she did not want to be in a relationship with him, he allegedly suffocated her, reports NorthJersey.com. Her body was found in the passenger seat of car the suspect drove to flee police. It is unclear how long Tulli had been dead when her body was pulled from the vehicle.

Goodell had served five months in Northern State Prison for assaulting and threatening a previous girlfriend in October 2008. He has now been charged with murder, eluding, assault by auto and two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. He is being held on $2 million bond.
